Books Recommended

During last summer's trip (2010) and again since then, several books have been suggested to us.  We pass them along to you as well.  Curiosity seems particularly important as we entertain new visions and commitments.  Read, reflect, wonder, question.

"Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths" by Karen Armstrong: How three radically different concepts of holiness have shaped and scarred the city for thousands of years.  And a provocative introduction to those three faith traditions.

"The Inner Journey: Views from the Jewish Tradition" from the PARABOLA Anthology Series: An introduction to the teachings of the greatest Jewish sages and masters of our time, to story, to parable and poetry.

"Jerusalem, Jerusalem: How the Ancient City Ignited Our Modern World" by James Carroll:  Carroll's latest dives headlong into the history and symbolism of Jerusalem.  With courage and passion, he asks how the brick-and-stone city is shaped and threatened by ancient and contemporary story.

"Gaza Stay Human" by Vittorio Aragoni: 'First and foremost an eyewitness account of an everyman and a true humanist....Vittorio Arrigoni volunteered with the International Solidarity Movement to help the people of Gaza as part of its mission to protect human rights. He was there during and after Operation 'Cast Lead'...' (Ilan Pappe, Professor of History, University of Exeter).

"Principles of Sufism" by Al Qushayri: The famous compendium of Sufi knowledge and practice by al-Qushayri (d. 1072).  Recommended to us by Sheikh Ghassan Manasrah in Nazareth.

"The Holocaust is Over: We Must Rise from the Ashes" by Avraham Burg: Modern-day Israel, and the Jewish community, are strongly influenced by the memory and horrors of Hitler and the Holocaust. Burg argues that the Jewish nation has been traumatized and has lost the ability to trust itself, its neighbors or the world around it. He shows that this is one of the causes for the growing nationalism and violence that are plaguing Israeli society and reverberating through Jewish communities worldwide.  Recommended by Sharon Morgenstern, our guide and teacher for this 14 day journey of spirit.
