I Pray for You, My Brother

A poem by Rabbi Paula Marcus

O people, we created you from the same male and female, and rendered you distinct peoples and tribes, that you may recognize one another.
Surah al-Hujurat (49:13)

How can we spread the light that shines form your bright green eyes?
We all carry these broken sparks yearning to return to the whole.

We hold our fragment, our shard, our splinter of the holy vessels.
They landed in our souls when time first began

Healing will not come from your perfect truth, or mine.
Healing will not come from praying in the perfect place, yours or mine.

Healing will only come from recognizing one another.
Healing will only come when the light from your eyes
Shines
In mine.
